The Yukon girls’ hockey team bounced back with a big win over N.W.T Wednesday at the 2023 Canada Winter Games in P.E.I.
The Yukon girls’ hockey team bounced back with a big win over N.W.T Wednesday at the 2023 Canada Winter Games in P.E.I.
It was their first win of the Games following two losses.
Yukon came out firing in the first period and never looked back.
Taylor Bierlmeier, who had a strong game for the Yukon, opened the scoring 2:40 into the game.
Emery Twardochleb made it 2-0 with a good shot from the slot with 8:57 left in the first period.
21 seconds later, Charlotte Siksik cleaned up a rebound to make it 3-0.
With 6:02 left in the first, Cassie Cebuliak made it 4-0 off another rebound.
N.W.T. got on the board late, Jenna Demarcke putting a shot from the slot through Yukon goalie Wynne Anderson-Lindsay’s legs with only 20 seconds left in the period.
The first ended with Yukon up 4-1.
A mostly uneventful second period picked up with Yukon captain Arnica Bulmer, who had another strong game for Yukon, ripping a shot into the top of the net with 3:04 left in the period.
Yukon got a power play with 1:50 left, but Anderson-Lindsay was forced to make back to back saves on a breakaway by Jaci Dusome, including a diving stop on the rebound.
The second ended with Yukon up 5-1.
Both teams exchanged chances in the third, with Yukon getting most of them.
Twardochleb finally broke through for the Yukon with a wraparound goal with 8:16 left in the third for her second of the game.
The game ended 6-1 for the Yukon girls.
Meanwhile, the alpine skiers sped down the slopes in the Giant Slalom Wednesday. Ellyann Dinn had the quickest Yukon time in the women’s division and Charles Nelson was the fastest Yukon male.
One judoka, Liam Gishler, was on the mat today for the Judo team. Gishler was in tough against B.C. and Manitoba judokas and lost both matches.
Archery began their Canada Games in the individual compound and recurve competitions Wednesday. In Round 1, Sofija Jewell, compound, shot 551 out of a possible 600 and Emmett Kapaniuk shot a 562. Shiori Monzo shot 404 in recurve, while Daniel Mead scored 397.
The snowboarders competed in a new discipline, Parallel Giant Slalom. Eli Wolsky laid down strong runs and made it to the round of 16, where he placed second in his heat.
The cross country skiers competed in the sprints, which began with an individual qualifier before moving into heats.
The entire women’s team – Constance Lapointe, Sophia Giangrande, Maude Molgat, Sophie Molgat, and Minty Bradford – made it to the top 30.
Simon Connell was the lone male to make it.
The Yukoners had good, fast skis and took the climbing sections well. Lapointe had the best result of the day, finishing 4th overall, while Molgat and Connell made it into the top 10.
The mixed doubles curling team, Bayly Scoffin and Nico Fecteau, played two very close games against tough draws Wednesday. They opened the day against Quebec and the duo made a late surge but fell 11-6. Against
Saskatchewan, the pair jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but couldn’t maintain it and fell 6-5.
